Amazon Bets on Frontier and Scales Back Nova, Its Internal AI
Amazon is reorganizing its AI strategy and scaling back most of its internal Nova models, according to information reported by Business Insider, citing internal sources. The cuts affect the flagship Nova Premier and Omni models, the video model Reel, as well as the image generator Canvas. These models remain online in "maintenance mode" for existing customers but are no longer actively developed. This withdrawal follows layoffs in the AGI division and the closure of the AGI Lab that Amazon had established in 2024 after acquiring Adept. The Nova models were first unveiled in December 2024.
However, Amazon is not stepping back from the AI race. Resources are now directed towards the Frontier model research group, led by Pieter Abbeel, who joined the company through the acquisition of the robotics startup Covariant. A new base model is expected to be presented at the re:Invent conference this fall. A spokesperson told Business Insider that AI models remain one of Amazon's most important projects. The company is also one of the largest investors in Anthropic and OpenAI, where investments could exceed $100 billion.
