Amazon Relaunches Mobile Venture with Alexa-Centric Phone

In 2014, Amazon attempted to establish itself in the smartphone market with the Fire Phone. This launch ended in a resounding failure, prompting the company to pull the device from sale just a year after its release. However, the online retail giant seems ready to try again. According to Reuters, Amazon is currently developing a new mobile phone that would seamlessly integrate into its vast ecosystem of software and hardware, including its Alexa-based smart hubs and its Prime Video television service.

This project, internally dubbed "Transformer," is still in the early stages of development. No specific information has been disclosed regarding a potential launch date or the features that would distinguish this device from existing smartphones on the market, particularly those from Apple and Samsung. Nevertheless, it is reported that this phone would emphasize artificial intelligence features rather than app downloads, thereby facilitating product purchases on Amazon and the use of its services such as Prime Video and Prime Music. While the Alexa voice assistant would play a central role, it would not serve as the phone's main operating system.

In parallel, Amazon is said to be designing a tablet running on Android, marking a departure from the brand's current tablets that use Fire OS software. This initiative could indicate a broader strategy aimed at diversifying Amazon's electronic product offerings.

Avoiding the Mistakes of the Fire Phone

The Fire Phone received mixed reviews upon its launch. Jessica Dolcourt, then editor-in-chief, rated the device 6.9/10, describing it as "bold, aspirational, and enjoyable to use," but she also pointed out its high price, inadequate performance, and technical specifications. She emphasized that to fully appreciate the Fire Phone, one needed to be deeply integrated into the Amazon ecosystem, and even then, the device did not offer many exclusive features compared to its competitors.

To succeed this time, Amazon will need to offer not only a device that integrates well with its platform but also a phone that stands out with its performance and standalone features. Jessica Dolcourt, now vice president of content operations and commerce at CNET, commented on Amazon's potential return to the smartphone market, stating that "Amazon has proven it can put its name behind consumer electronics at an accessible price point." However, she added that "the hardest part is creating a compelling phone that people actually want to use." It is not enough to have a few advantages tied to a giant platform; the device must perform well as a standalone product.

It remains to be seen whether Amazon has learned from its past mistakes and whether it will succeed in developing a phone capable of competing with industry leaders like Apple and Samsung. For now, we can only hope that this rumor does not fade away before the successor to the Fire Phone comes to fruition.
