Amazon Invests in Advertising on ChatGPT
Amazon has recently taken a significant step by investing in advertising on ChatGPT, an initiative that positions it among the first major retailers to explore this new advertising domain from OpenAI. This decision was highlighted by Juozas Kaziukėnas, a recognized analyst in the e-commerce sector.
The advertisements implemented by Amazon aim to redirect users to its own online store. This allows Amazon to maintain control over the customer experience as well as the transactions. Kaziukėnas emphasized in an interview with Business Insider that this move is "symbolic." Indeed, Amazon has so far avoided engaging in AI shopping initiatives that would allow third-party agents to access its product, pricing, and inventory data.
An AI Strategy Under Pressure
This initiative from Amazon highlights a tension within its artificial intelligence strategy. While the company is willing to invest to reach the vast audience of ChatGPT, it remains cautious about access to its shopping data. Amazon strictly limits how AI systems can use this data.
Rather than allowing these platforms to aggregate its catalog, Amazon prefers to use them as marketing channels. This enables it to direct customers straight to its online marketplace, thereby preserving its control. An Amazon spokesperson chose not to comment on this strategy.
Advertising on ChatGPT in Action
Kaziukėnas shared a screenshot of an Amazon advertisement on ChatGPT via a post on LinkedIn. This image showed the chatbot suggesting various products during a search for a coffee maker, followed by a sponsored advertisement from Amazon highlighting "Top Rated Kitchen Equipment."
Data Protection and Competition
Amazon has taken steps to limit scraping and data collection by AIs, which could be used to create competing shopping experiences. Last year, Amazon stopped providing product feeds to Google Shopping results and updated its codebase to block several bots, including those from OpenAI, according to Kaziukėnas. Earlier this year, Amazon also obtained a court order to block the AI agent from Perplexity.
Opportunities for OpenAI
Amazon's entry into ChatGPT could also be seen as a positive signal for OpenAI's emerging advertising sector. Early data indicates that ChatGPT users frequently encounter advertisements during commercial intent searches. Advertisers are beginning to view the chatbot as a new channel to reach consumers actively seeking products.
Kaziukėnas stated that this trend shows that OpenAI could more easily monetize purchase intent through advertisements than through agent-based commerce, a path it recently abandoned. He anticipates rapid growth for OpenAI's advertising business.
