Ambi Raises $26M for a Continuous Listening Assistant

The startup Ambi, co-founded by former Plaud Peter Mo, has raised $26 million to develop a continuous listening assistance agent. iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch applications are announced, along with a future device that has ambient capture disabled by default and encrypted data, according to the company. However, uncertainties remain regarding how to notify third parties when conversations are recorded.
Ambi promises user control, but signaling remains unclear
Ambi's project comes as criticism intensifies against AI devices that do not clearly indicate they are capturing data about the user's surroundings. It is not established whether Ambi's applications or future device will have sufficient indicators to alert third parties in case of recording without user disclosure. Some meeting note-taking companies have already faced lawsuits for recordings and data collection without consent, and Apple's recent Voice Intelligence feature, which transcribes continuously, has reignited privacy concerns.
Peter Mo assures that ambient capture can be disabled at any time and is turned off by default. Ambi claims not to retain recordings and to encrypt data, without specifying the type of encryption. According to Peter Mo, the responsibility to inform those affected by ambient capture falls on the users. He describes the disclosure issue as a supply chain problem, states that he has increased information locations, and acknowledges that in cases of concealment by users, the company cannot address the issue alone.
Applications and device planned for meeting assistance
Ambi plans applications for iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch, designed as meeting note-takers. Users will be able to enable continuous listening to capture context throughout the day. Beyond the post-call automation practiced in the industry, Ambi aims for an agent that begins work during the meeting, with proactive suggestions based on the calendar, meetings, a knowledge base, and web data. Continuity of activity across devices is also announced.
On computers, the upcoming application is expected to analyze users' work and memorize key elements to further personalize its suggestions, an approach already visible in services like Littlebird or Minimi. The company also envisions a dedicated device equipped with a screen, speaker, camera, and microphones to capture context and display information. Peter Mo summarizes the ambition of using AI "anytime and anywhere" and contrasts this approach with hardware that requires transfer, cloud sending, and processing before obtaining results.

$26 million raised from Luminous Ventures and Huaqin
Ambi reports having raised $26 million in several rounds announced on Monday. The funding was led by Luminous Ventures, an investor that has previously supported Meituan and Unitree Robotics. The ODM manufacturer Huaqin is also among the financial backers.
A bet on personalized assistance and a team spread across China and the United States
Ambi positions itself within a trend that attributes more effective systems to assist individuals when they have rich context, leading tech players to design devices and software for continuous listening or observation, despite ongoing reservations about privacy and security. In this landscape, meeting note-taking has already industrialized the automation of tasks based on summaries and action items, while other tools memorize context to adapt their responses.
The company has more than 50 employees and operates from San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. It is recruiting for go-to-market roles as well as AI engineers dedicated to speech recognition models.
