AMD Acquires Taalas to Boost Silicon-Integrated AI
AMD has acquired the Canadian startup Taalas, which develops specialized inference chips. Founded in Toronto in 2023, Taalas made its debut in February with an original approach: the company integrates the architecture of a model and its trained parameters directly into the chip. This makes inference extremely fast, but locks each chip to a single model. A demonstration chip achieved over 16,000 tokens per second per user while running Llama 3.1-8B, significantly faster than competing hardware. Google is reportedly working on a similar chip for Gemini.
Taalas's demonstration chip, with Llama hardcoded, outperforms all other inference chips in terms of raw speed, but it is limited to this unique model.
AMD plans to integrate this technology into its roadmap for accelerators and offer it alongside Instinct GPUs as a system-level solution. Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AMD's AI division, stated that this deal strengthens the company's AI portfolio. Ljubisa Bajic, co-founder of Taalas, added that AMD provides the scale and reach that the startup needs. The acquisition is subject to standard regulatory approvals.
