Android Auto: Gemini Accesses Personal Data by Option

Google begins activating Personal Intelligence in Android Auto. The Gemini assistant can, with explicit consent, draw from sources like Gmail, Calendar, Photos, or YouTube to respond. The feature is controllable at any time, and Google asserts safeguards on data usage and hosting. Examples of in-car uses are highlighted, without enabling the feature by default.
Announced Privacy and User Control Over Access
Google states that the information processed through Personal Intelligence remains within its secure infrastructure and is not shared with third-party services. The company also clarifies that Gemini does not train on users' personal context for its core AI models. Users can enable or disable Personal Intelligence at any time, and permissions already granted in the Gemini profile are carried over when using it in the car. By default, the feature is turned off, and in this case, Gemini's responses rely on general knowledge. Access can be managed precisely, particularly for search and discovery data, for YouTube and its history, as well as for Google Workspace, including Gmail, Calendar, and Drive. It is also possible to delete memory items such as past conversations with the assistant to prevent them from being reused, for example, an old question about a dashboard symbol.

Targeted Uses in the Car with Personal Context
Personal Intelligence allows the assistant to access, retrieve, and synthesize information from personal applications. For instance, a driver can ask for the boarding gate of their next flight as well as any potential delays. For restaurant recommendations nearby, Gemini can rely on search history and emails, identify a vegan diet, and tailor its suggestions. Adding context such as schedules, flights, or various photos is intended to enhance the quality and relevance of responses. In theory, this would lead to fewer follow-up questions, fewer clarifications, and more focused driving.
Availability, Opt-in, and Functional Scope
The rollout of Gemini Personal Intelligence in Android Auto begins today. Once activated, the assistant can access personal sources such as Photos, Gmail, Calendar, and other services. This collection is opt-in, with the ability to precisely choose which applications and services are authorized. Personal Intelligence was initially launched on Android phones and in search, while Gemini was already present in Android Auto and in vehicles with Google integrated at the end of last year. Google announces improvements to its assistant to support more productive uses.
