Android: Google Sets New Memory and Connection Thresholds by 2027

Faced with memory supply constraints, Google is introducing new requirements for Android applications. Performance thresholds and code optimizations are planned, along with developer assistance tools. Two deadlines have been set: February 2027 for technical thresholds and April 2027 for Zero Tap Sign-In during migrations.
Two Deadlines Set the Timeline for Changes
Developers must prepare for two dates: February 2027 to comply with the new performance thresholds, and April 2027 to implement the Zero Tap Sign-In requirement during device migrations. The latter mandates that applications with a login, whether optional or mandatory, automatically restore the login state via the Android Restore Credentials API. At the same time, Google is introducing code optimization requirements as well as thresholds related to dynamic memory usage and bitmap images.

Memory Shortage and Pressure on Entry-Level Devices
Google describes significant hardware supply constraints that reduce memory availability on devices. The company presents its measures as a way to help application and game developers maintain a quality experience in a market where memory may be less accessible, particularly on entry-level models where price is a crucial factor. The revision of requirements comes amid industry-wide memory chip shortages attributed to the rise of AI-related data centers.
Tools to Monitor and Limit Memory Usage
Google is rolling out tools that alert developers when their applications exceed the new thresholds, to facilitate code optimization. Additional diagnostic capabilities are expected later this year, including in-depth insights provided by a Memory Limiter feature, which will prevent applications from using too much device memory. These tools accompany the introduction of two new requirements, one of which explicitly targets reducing memory usage and optimizing code.
