Anna Paulina Luna Refutes Use of AI for Defense Amendment
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, representing Florida, has recently been at the center of a controversy regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in drafting an amendment for a defense bill. She stated that her staff had employed AI solely for spell-checking in the summary of an amendment, but firmly denied that AI was used to write the text of the amendment itself. According to Luna, "No legislation is ever written with AI."
This clarification came after several accounts on the platform X began sharing screenshots of a summary of an amendment related to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2027. The text in question mentioned: "Identical to H.R. 100 (118th Congress). 11:25 AM ???? Claude responded: Requires the Secretary of Defense to designate the activities, support, and operations of the Department of Defense at the southwest land border as a named operation with…"
The mention of "Claude" in the text raised questions, suggesting a possible AI intervention in the drafting process. However, Luna quickly responded to dispel these doubts, clarifying that AI had only been used for minor spell-checking tasks, with no involvement in legislative drafting.
