Anthropic: $322,000 per Employee in Q3, 15% of Revenue by 2026

Anthropic spent over $1.7 billion on personnel between July and September, averaging $322,000 per employee for the quarter. Despite this expense, personnel costs accounted for only 15% of revenue in the first nine months of 2026. The company is planning an IPO this month, as $32 billion in stock-based compensation remains to be accounted for.
Personnel costs at 15% of revenue in 2026, with high productivity per employee
In the first nine months of 2026, Anthropic reported that its personnel costs represented 15% of total revenue. In 2023, the company spent more than twice as much on personnel as it generated in revenue. Anthropic recorded $6.6 million in annual revenue per employee, compared to $3.2 million for Meta and $2.5 million for Google, according to estimates. Anthropic's workforce has increased fivefold from the end of 2024 to the end of September 2026, reaching 5,300 people, a figure significantly lower than Meta's (approximately 67,000 employees) or Broadcom's (over 30,000).
$32 billion in stock-based compensation to be accounted for and an anticipated IPO
As of the end of September, Anthropic had over $32 billion in unrecognized stock-based compensation expenses on its books. The company plans to go public this month. A successful IPO would increase personnel costs in the coming quarters. The IPO is also expected to provide employees with significant liquidity and create a new cohort of multimillionaires.

$1.7 billion in the last quarter, dominated by $1.1 billion in stock
Between July and September, Anthropic spent over $1.7 billion on personnel, averaging more than $322,000 per employee over three months, which translates to over $100,000 per month. This amount includes salaries, bonuses, benefits, and payroll taxes, with the largest portion coming from stock-based compensation, which totaled $1.1 billion for the quarter. For the first nine months of 2026, the payroll bill reached $4.8 billion. Dario Amodei noted that the number of employees remains deliberately limited, while Anthropic specifies in its S-1 that "talent density matters more than talent mass." To attract experienced candidates, the company has offered substantial compensation and benefited from a significant increase in valuation; even employees who joined the company just a few years ago have seen the value of their stock options rise.
Sector comparisons and valuation target mentioned
Meta is valued at approximately $1.6 trillion, a level presented as a potential target for Anthropic's IPO.
