Anthropic Targets India with a Localized Pricing Strategy

Anthropic, a leading company in the field of artificial intelligence, has taken a significant step by adapting the pricing of its Claude service for the Indian market. This country, which is the most populous in the world, represents the second most important market for Anthropic after the United States. This move is part of a broader trend where AI companies seek to customize their offerings to better meet the specific needs of local users.

On the Claude website and mobile applications, some Indian users have begun to see prices displayed in rupees. However, despite this advancement, Anthropic has not yet integrated the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a very popular instant payment system in India. Currently, users still have to make their payments via credit card or through the billing systems of Apple and Google’s app stores. This situation contrasts with that of OpenAI, which introduced pricing in rupees for ChatGPT as early as August, while also offering the option to pay via UPI.

Growing Demand for Subscriptions in Rupees

Indian users of Claude have long expressed a desire to subscribe using their local currency, as dollar pricing and currency conversions pose barriers to accessing the service. This pricing adaptation is particularly crucial as India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, according to data provided by Anthropic, making it a key market after the United States.

On the Indian Claude website, the subscription rates for Claude Pro are set at ₹2,000 per month, approximately 21 dollars, for annual payment. In the United States, the same service is offered at 17 dollars per month. For the Claude Max subscription, the rate in India is ₹11,999 per month, about 125 dollars, compared to 100 dollars in the United States. Team plans start at ₹2,399 per seat per month, roughly 25 dollars, versus 20 dollars in the United States. These prices include local taxes, and it is worth noting that prices on mobile applications may slightly differ from those displayed on the website.

A Targeted Expansion Strategy in India

The initiative to price in rupees is part of a broader strategy by Anthropic to strengthen its presence in India. The company opened an office in Bengaluru in February, after announcing this decision in October. Additionally, in January, Anthropic appointed Irina Ghose, former Managing Director of Microsoft India, to lead its operations in the country. The company has also partnered with Indian IT giants such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, aiming to promote AI adoption in the enterprise sector.

However, this expansion has not been without challenges. In June, Anthropic suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-U.S. entities, prompting some Indian developers and entrepreneurs to consider alternatives to American AI models. While the restriction on Fable 5 has been lifted, access to Mythos 5 remains limited.

India, a Crucial Market for AI

India has become an increasingly strategic market for AI companies due to its vast community of developers and technology professionals. However, converting this large user base into paying subscribers presents a challenge in a market where price sensitivity is high.

Anthropic has not responded to requests for comments regarding the introduction of pricing in Indian rupees, but this initiative underscores the growing importance of India in the company's overall strategy.
