Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, recently expressed concerns about the speed at which leading AI labs are advancing. According to him, this rapid progress makes it difficult for society to keep pace. In a blog post, Anthropic proposed a coordinated slowdown in AI development. The company believes that AI is evolving at such a rate that it could soon contribute to the creation of its successors, raising questions about society's ability to keep up with these advancements.

Anthropic stated, "It would be good for the world to have the option to slow down." This statement highlights the need to give societal structures and alignment research time to catch up with technological advancements. The company clarified that a temporary pause in the development of cutting-edge AI might be necessary to prevent the technology from outpacing society's adaptive capabilities.

The Impact of AI on Industry

Anthropic's warning comes as AI is redefining the tech industry and the economy at a dizzying pace. In recent months, leaders have touted AI's growing ability to perform tasks once carried out by humans, ranging from writing software code to managing recruitment and customer service. For instance, Google has stated that AI now generates 75% of its code. Additionally, Brendan Foody, CEO of Mercor, revealed that his startup spends more on AI tokens than on employee salaries.

This increasing automation has led to layoffs and restructuring in several companies. Anthropic also shared its internal data, indicating that over 80% of the code integrated into its base is written by Claude, their AI. The company observed a significant increase in the number of code merges per engineer between 2024 and 2026, underscoring AI's impact on efficiency and productivity.

Challenges and the Need for Coordination

While AI is becoming increasingly capable of handling complex tasks, it still struggles with high-level judgments and deciding which problems are worth solving. Anthropic emphasized that AI capabilities are progressing rapidly but did not call for an immediate pause. The company stressed the need for coordination between AI developers and governments for a slowdown to be effective. It warned that a unilateral pause by a single company would do little to enhance safety.

Anthropic also noted that similar arrangements have existed for other powerful technologies but cautioned that building the necessary infrastructure and trust takes time. "We do not have that time," the company concluded, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
