Anthropic Builds Bio Lab Where Claude Will Guide Robots

Anthropic is preparing a biology lab in the San Francisco area to transition from simulations to physical experiments. The project envisions Claude orchestrating robots with human supervision. This ramp-up follows the acquisition of approximately $400 million in Coefficient Bio and the arrival of Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan on the board. The company does not intend to conduct its own clinical trials for the time being.
No Clinical Trials Planned and Consolidation Through Acquisition and Governance
Anthropic does not plan to conduct its own clinical trials at this time, in order to avoid competing with pharmaceutical companies, according to a source. In April, the company acquired the startup Coefficient Bio for about $400 million. It has also added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board of directors.

From Virtual to Physical: A Lab in San Francisco and Ready Tools
The laboratory is located in the San Francisco area. Anthropic is establishing this infrastructure to further advance AI-assisted drug development, moving beyond computer simulations and allowing for the conduct of physical experiments. According to the plan, Claude is set to pilot robots during these experiments while minimizing human intervention. Two tools are already available to support this initiative: Claude Science, an AI workspace designed for researchers, and the Model Hardware Standard, which is used to operate laboratory equipment. Anthropic emphasizes that human supervision remains necessary for safety reasons.
Therapeutic Targets and Promises Mentioned by the Life Sciences Division
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of the life sciences division at Anthropic, believes that the greatest opportunity lies in diseases that have long been considered untreatable due to the lack of treatment. According to him, AI could accelerate the design of complex antibodies capable of targeting multiple targets simultaneously.
