Anthropic Challenges OpenAI: Extended Access to Fable 5 Until 2026
Anthropic is extending free access to Fable 5 for its subscribers as OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol intensifies the price war.
Anthropic is keeping Claude Fable 5 available to subscribers longer than expected. The model was set to transition to a pay-per-use system starting today. However, according to Anthropic's support page, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers can continue using Claude Fable 5 at no additional cost until July 19, 2026. Up to 50% of the weekly usage limit can be allocated to Fable 5. After this date, users can either pay with credits or switch to another model. Anthropic has also extended the 50% bonus for Claude Code limits until the same date. Fable 5 consumes the usage quota more quickly than other Claude models.
This extension is likely a response to the increasing price pressure. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol is included in a standard ChatGPT subscription, is cheaper via the API, and is reputed to be more efficient in terms of tokens. Anthropic cannot compete solely on the strength of Claude Opus 4.8, especially with budget-level competitors like GLM 5.2, Meta's Spark 1.1, and Grok 4.5 gaining ground.
