Anthropic Surpasses OpenAI in the Professional Sector

For the first time, Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in terms of the number of verified professional clients, according to this month's AI index published by fintech company Ramp. Ramp's client spending data indicates that 34.4% of participating companies are paying for Anthropic's services, compared to 32.3% for OpenAI. This shift marks the first time Anthropic has taken the lead in this area.

Ramp's economist, Ara Kharazian, explained to TechCrunch that Anthropic already has a strong presence in sectors such as finance, technology, and professional services. However, OpenAI maintains an advantage in other sectors, although this gap has narrowed in recent months.

A Significant Sample

Although Ramp's index only covers companies using its services, it includes over 50,000 businesses, making it a sufficiently large and diverse sample to be significant. This trend is also visible in the OpenRouter rankings, where OpenAI was ranked above Anthropic for the last time in December 2025.

A Transformative Year for Anthropic

The past 12 months have been particularly significant for Anthropic. In May 2025, only 9% of companies were using its products, a figure that surged to 26% in the following year. Meanwhile, OpenAI's share decreased by 1%, while overall AI product usage increased by 9%.

Kharazian remains cautious about the sustainability of this advantage, but he acknowledges that Anthropic's strategy has been effective. "What Anthropic has done has worked very well," he stated, highlighting their initial approach focused on a technical clientele before expanding through tools like Cowork.
