Anthropic unveils MHS, an open bridge between AI and machines

Anthropic introduces the Model Hardware Standard, an interface designed to connect AI agents to physical equipment. The technology is currently being tested in a pre-release phase with partners, with an open-source publication planned and the promise of significantly reducing integration times.
Announced Openness and Broad Compatibility
Anthropic plans to make the Model Hardware Standard open source. The company claims that this interface is compatible with any device that has a programmable interface and with any AI agent. Thus, similar to the Model Context Protocol, MHS could be adopted by competing models and not be limited to Claude models.
Translator Function and Target Use Cases
The Model Hardware Standard serves as a gateway between an AI agent and the APIs of hardware. This standard allows for interaction with various devices such as cameras, robotic arms, control stations, 3D printers, sensors, or lasers, enabling new forms of automation. This system aims to simplify the management of physical objects by AI agents. According to Anthropic, researchers and engineers could more easily orchestrate continuous autonomous experiments and workflows, with agents capable of analyzing each step, modifying parameters in real-time, and, in some cases, correcting hardware errors without human intervention.

Integration Times and Promised Gains
Anthropic states that a factory or laboratory typically needs several weeks or months to integrate AI agents with physical equipment. With MHS, these integrations could be completed in a matter of hours or minutes, according to the company. If the technology delivers on its promises, it could enable machines to achieve productivity gains similar to those already observed in applications thanks to AI agents.
Pre-release, Security, and MCP Context
The Model Hardware Standard is available in pre-release to select partners, and testing is underway in the fields of research, robotics, electronics, and manufacturing. This phase aims to assess the safety of integrating AI agents into the physical world and to develop best practices. Anthropic, which has already released the Model Context Protocol to connect AI to online services and whose use has become widespread in the industry, now seeks to extend this connection to physical objects with the introduction of the MHS protocol.
