Anthropic has recently updated its artificial intelligence model, Sonnet, by introducing Sonnet 5. The company presents this model as the most agentic in the series, specifically targeting product designers.
Sonnet 5: An Economical Alternative to Opus 4.8
Sonnet 5 stands out for its ability to compete with Opus 4.8 in key areas such as agentic coding and multidisciplinary reasoning. According to performance benchmarks provided by Anthropic, Sonnet 5 proves to be just as capable as its predecessor on benchmarks like Terminal-Bench 2.1 and Humanity’s Lab Exam.
However, the major advantage of Sonnet 5 lies in its economic efficiency and speed. It delivers performance equivalent to 94% of that of Opus 4.8, but at a significantly lower cost. In fact, using Sonnet 5 costs $2 for one million tokens in input and output, compared to the $10 required for Opus 4.8. Additionally, Sonnet 5 is faster and more efficient in terms of token management.
Practical Experimentation: Sonnet 5 vs. Opus 4.8
To concretely assess the capabilities of Sonnet 5, a real product design task, such as creating a new landing page, was chosen to compare its performance against Opus 4.8. This experimentation aims to determine whether Sonnet 5 can indeed provide a viable and more economical solution for designers while maintaining high output quality.
