Dianne Penn, a Pioneer in AI Usage at Anthropic
Dianne Penn, who serves as the product lead at Anthropic, recently revealed how she integrates artificial intelligence into her management practices. During a podcast, she explained that she uses Claude, the AI model developed by Anthropic, to facilitate the management of her team. She also encourages her fellow managers to adopt this technology to enhance the quality of interactions within their teams.
Since taking the helm of product management for research and labs at Anthropic in 2023, Penn has made AI a central element of her management toolkit. In a recent episode of "Lenny's Podcast," she detailed how Claude has helped her become a more effective manager.
AI as a Coaching and Communication Tool
Penn shared her experience by emphasizing the importance of using Claude to become a better coach. She explained that AI can provide appropriate words and phrases, which are often difficult to find in complex situations. "This is something I've shared with our managers: how to use Claude to become a better coach," she stated.
She encouraged her colleagues to leverage AI to enrich conversations and improve their managerial skills. According to her, AI not only enhances the IQ of experiences but also prepares one for crucial discussions.
Inspired by Management Literature
Dianne Penn also mentioned her interest in the book "Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High." Inspired by this work, she developed a custom skill for Claude that helps her prepare for delicate professional conversations.
She explained, "I have a skill that helps me determine if I'm at the right level of detail for the situation, which helps me be a better manager and a better support for the team."
Claude, a Thinking Partner
Penn views the use of Claude as personalized coaching. She clarified that she doesn't always use the AI's suggestions but finds the process of reflection and brainstorming extremely helpful. "There are times when I don't end up using Claude's suggestions. But it proves very useful for thinking and brainstorming," she added.
She emphasizes that Claude should not think for her. Instead, the AI should serve to refine her ideas after she has formed her own viewpoint. She sees Claude as a "thinking partner" that does not merely agree but contributes to improving outcomes.
"What you don't want is an AI that simply agrees with you," she asserted. "What you want is for this technology to enhance and improve outcomes. And sometimes, the fact that Claude contradicts me makes me better."
In conclusion, Penn aspires for AI to play a role similar to that of a colleague, capable of challenging her ideas to help them evolve. "Like a colleague, I want someone to contradict me when my ideas are not fully formed," she concluded.
