Anthropic and Samsung: Towards Custom AI Chips
Anthropic is in talks with Samsung Electronics to manufacture a custom AI chip, according to information reported by The Information. The project is still in its early stages, with no detailed design at this time. Anthropic is currently determining the chip's features and the necessary power.
The company has downplayed this effort, telling The Information that chips from AWS, Google, and Nvidia remain central to its strategy. It declined to comment on any plans for developing its own chips.
However, signs indicate that a chip is in the works. Anthropic has recruited chip specialists, including Clive Chan, a former member of the chip design teams at Tesla and OpenAI. He is expected to develop a dedicated chip group at Anthropic.
This initiative is part of a broader trend. Those who can build and manage AI infrastructure more economically retain a larger share of the revenue. Custom chips are key to achieving this. OpenAI recently unveiled "Jalapeño," its first internally developed inference chip, manufactured with Broadcom. AWS, Google, and Meta are all leveraging custom silicones tailored for AI workloads.
