Anthropic is Considering an AI Chip with Samsung
Last April, Reuters revealed that Anthropic was considering developing its own artificial intelligence chips to address the shortages affecting the sector. This idea now seems to be gaining traction, as the company is seriously committing to this path.
On Thursday, The Information reported that Anthropic had begun discussions with Samsung for a potential collaboration on this new chip. However, several aspects remain unclear: the exact use of this chip, its integration into servers, and its power have not yet been determined, according to the report.
When asked by TechCrunch, Anthropic emphasized the importance of a diverse hardware architecture in its strategy, utilizing chips supplied by Google, Amazon, and Nvidia. Regarding discussions with Samsung, the company preferred not to elaborate further on the subject.
Towards Independence from Nvidia?
Many AI-focused companies are seeking to design custom chips. The goal is twofold: to create hardware optimized for specific tasks and to reduce their dependence on Nvidia, which currently dominates the chip market.
Anthropic's initiative could also be seen as a response to OpenAI, which recently announced a partnership with Broadcom to develop a custom inference processor called "Jalapeño." OpenAI claims that this chip offers superior energy performance compared to its competitors. Meanwhile, Amazon and Google are also offering custom TPUs in their cloud offerings.
Samsung, a Key Player in the AI Industry
Samsung is already playing a major role in the AI sector, particularly as a partner of Nvidia. The Korean company produces essential chips for training and running Nvidia's AI models while using its software for its own manufacturing. Together, they are working on an AI chip factory in South Korea. Additionally, Samsung has also discussed a collaboration with Google to enhance its chip manufacturing capabilities.
