Anthropic now links the memory of Claude chat and Claude Cowork, with a bidirectional operation and dedicated controls. By default, the tool does not record sensitive topics, and memory is automatically activated for public offerings on web, desktop, and mobile. Businesses have settings where the recording of sensitive subjects remains disabled by default. Options to pause, reset, and edit memories are accessible in a new section of the settings.
Claude activates memory by default and allows it to be disabled
Users can interrupt memory at any time or reset it. The tool includes settings dedicated to sensitive content. By default, Claude does not retain information related to health, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, political opinions, gender identity, and other similar categories. However, it is possible to allow the memorization of certain sensitive topics; in this case, a notice will appear. The controls are located in a new Memory section of the settings. Everyone can activate or disable chat memory tracking, adjust the retention of sensitive topics, and edit already recorded items. For businesses, the recording of sensitive subjects is disabled by default for the Enterprise and Teams levels.
Chat and Cowork now share a common history
Anthropic merges the memory between Claude chat and Claude Cowork. Starting today, both environments rely on the same memory, and exchanges begin with information already known to the user, according to the publisher. Memorization is bidirectional: what is retained on one side is taken into account on the other. Until now, each space kept its history separately, with chat in the chatbot and Cowork in Cowork. Now, Cowork has a memory announced as identical to that of chat, and the memory already established in chat should be usable in Cowork, in addition to new interactions. Memory updates occur gradually throughout conversations.
Covered scope and available platforms
Memory functions are offered at all levels of chat and Cowork. Memory is activated by default on the Free, Pro, and Max plans, both on the web and on desktop and mobile applications. In the announcement, Anthropic did not mention Claude Code.
