Anthropic: The First Billion in Four Years, Unprecedented

Reaching one billion dollars in annual revenue in just four years is what Anthropic has achieved since its founding in 2021. To measure the progress made, one only needs to look at how long it took leading tech companies to reach this symbolic milestone: a decade for Snowflake and Zoom, eight years for OpenAI, and five years for Google.

For OpenAI, this timeframe can be attributed to the lengthy phase of non-commercial research before the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.

How Did Anthropic Catch Up and Then Surpass OpenAI?

By early 2025, Anthropic crossed the one billion dollar annualized revenue threshold, less than two years after the launch of Claude in March 2023. By August 2025, this figure had reached five billion dollars. By the end of 2025, it exceeded nine billion dollars. In March 2026, it reached nineteen billion dollars. And, a month later, the latest estimates indicate that it is expected to record thirty billion dollars by early 2027, representing a thirty-fold increase in just over a year.

Anthropic now has over 300,000 professional clients, and the number of large accounts (clients generating over 100,000 dollars in annual revenue each) has increased sevenfold over the past year, the American firm announced in a blog post on September 2, 2025.

To put these figures into perspective, OpenAI is projected to have an annualized revenue of 25 billion dollars in 2026. In a blog post published on March 31, 2026, the company founded by Sam Altman emphasized that its "revenue is growing four times faster than that of the companies that shaped the eras of the Internet and mobile, such as Alphabet and Meta." However, data shows that this performance lags behind that of Anthropic during the same period.

From Experimentation to Strategic Investment in Generative AI

Anthropic's trajectory is not solely explained by the quality of its models. It primarily reveals that artificial intelligence has become a strategic spending item for companies, rather than just an experimental tool. According to Axios, over 1,000 companies are each investing more than one million dollars per year in Claude, a figure that has reportedly doubled in less than two months.

This shift is structural. Generative AI within companies is no longer a speculative market; it is a real market with recurring revenues, significant contracts, and growth that accelerates quarter after quarter. The question is no longer whether companies will integrate these tools, but how quickly.
