Anthropic Launches a Biological Lab and Controlled Access to Its AIs

The AI company operates a wet biology lab in the San Francisco Bay and is launching a verified access device to its models. These initiatives come alongside repeated warnings about risks, external criticisms, and a stated intention not to compete with pharma.
Warnings About Risks and Public Criticism
The resignation of Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, was accompanied by a warning: according to him, some people developing AI believe it could lead to the death of all humanity by the end of the decade. Internally, the head of alignment at Anthropic estimated the probability of AI exterminating humanity in the next decade to be over 10%. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, recently called on the industry to slow down and implement self-regulation, and he has repeatedly cited bioterrorism as one of the greatest risks associated with AI. These warnings have sparked reactions in the tech sector, such as that of Chamath Palihapitiya, an investor and startup founder, who criticized Anthropic's creation of a wet lab on X and stated that he does not recommend it.
An Internal Lab Dedicated to Fundamental Biology
Anthropic has confirmed that it operates a wet biology lab in the Bay Area, where its AI models are used to conduct physical experiments. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of life sciences at Anthropic, asserts that laboratory experimentation remains essential for biology and specifies that the company is currently conducting this type of work. He indicates that the lab operates like most biotech labs, with internal research and collaborations with external partners. Anthropic has not provided details on the specific work being conducted in this lab but emphasizes that the focus is on fundamental biology, not drug discovery. This activity follows the acquisition of Coefficient Bio, a company specializing in AI biotechnology, in April.

Relations with Pharma and Competitive Positioning
Anthropic claims it does not want to appear in competition with the pharmaceutical industry, a sector where it has many major clients and partners. The company recently announced that it has formed a partnership with Novo Nordisk for collaborative drug discovery. Anthropic has faced criticism for offering products seen as rivals to those of its own clientele, which sheds light on its current communication.
Verified Access Program and Technical Publications
Anthropic has launched a Life Sciences Verification Program, allowing verified biology researchers to access its most powerful AI models. The company has also published reports on its research aimed at supporting drug discovery, particularly on accelerating protein design and improving bimolecular modeling. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, believes that AI could enable the cure for most major diseases within the next 5 to 10 years.
