Anthropic Reaches Record Valuation Ahead of IPO

The artificial intelligence startup, Anthropic, recently raised $65 billion in a Series H funding round, bringing its post-money valuation to $965 billion. This fundraising could very well be the last before the company enters the public markets.

The funding round was co-led by major players such as Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, Capital Group, and Coatue. Renowned institutional investors, including Baillie Gifford, Blackstone, Brookfield, D.E. Shaw Ventures, DST Global, and Fidelity Management & Research, also participated.

Strategic Partners and Previous Commitments

Strategic infrastructure partners, including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, joined this funding round. A portion of $15 billion from this round comes from prior commitments by hyperscalers, including $5 billion from Amazon announced last April.

According to TechCrunch, Anthropic was on the verge of finalizing a $50 billion round last month, sparking intense competition among investors to secure a spot on the capital table. One institutional investor even offered up to $5 billion to secure a meeting with Anthropic's CFO, Krishna Rao.

Use of Funds and New Developments

Anthropic plans to use these funds to "advance our research on safety and interpretability, expand our computing capacity to meet the growing demand for Claude, and develop the products and partnerships that our customers rely on."

This funding coincides with the launch of the new model Claude Opus 4.8, which stands out for its enhanced capabilities in agentic tasks, advanced coding, and a focus on honesty and self-correction. Anthropic also plans to more widely deploy models comparable to its cybersecurity model Mythos, which has so far been released in a limited manner due to security concerns.

Growth and Financial Outlook

The company has experienced significant growth since its last funding round, particularly among enterprise clients using Claude Code. Anthropic announced that its annual revenue surpassed $47 billion this month, and according to the Wall Street Journal, it expects a 130% increase in revenue, aiming for its first operating profit.

Brad Gerstner, founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, stated: "The latest advancements of Claude have led to widespread adoption among the world's most demanding organizations. This momentum positions Anthropic to lead the next phase of innovation in AI and seize the enormous opportunity at hand."

Competition with OpenAI and SpaceX

Anthropic is in direct competition with OpenAI for funding and expanding its user base ahead of their respective IPOs. OpenAI recently raised an impressive $122 billion round in March, with a post-money valuation of $852 billion.

Meanwhile, SpaceX led by Elon Musk, which merged with xAI earlier this year, aims for a valuation of $2 trillion during its upcoming IPO and is looking to raise over $75 billion.
