Anthropic Secures $10 Billion in Cloud Power from Volta

Anthropic has secured $10 billion in computing capacity from Volta Infra Holdings, a cloud startup that has only been around for a few months. According to Bloomberg, the agreement spans six years. The computing power comes from a data center in Tydal, Norway, where Bitcoin miner Bitdeer Technologies operates an infrastructure powered by hydroelectricity, equipped with the latest Vera Rubin chips from Nvidia. Volta estimates this capacity at 133 megawatts, with a transfer occurring in two phases until March 2027. The company claims to have secured 1 gigawatt of energy for its data centers in the short term. Bitdeer's stock surged by 14% following the announcement.

Volta was founded in early 2026 by former executives from asset management firm Brookfield. The company raised $300 million in venture capital alongside the agreement with Anthropic, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter Capital. Nvidia and Michael Dell also invested, bringing the valuation to $2.4 billion. Additionally, Volta has established a $5 billion financing fund to help clients cover the costs of expensive AI chips.

Anthropic is aggressively ramping up its computing capacity. The company already has agreements in place with Google, Broadcom, Amazon, SpaceX, and AMD. Critics warn that the complex dependencies between chip suppliers and AI developers could amplify losses if AI demand does not meet expectations. Volta exemplifies this pattern. Nvidia is both an investor in the startup and the supplier of the chips it deploys.
