Anthropic is not stopping there. The company is also offering a position for a Head of Writing and Content, with a salary range from $320,000 to $400,000. The primary mission of this role is to translate the technical capabilities of products and customer outcomes into clear and engaging language. This strategy reflects a broader trend in the tech sector where effective communication has become essential.
Writing: An Evolving Profession
Although examples like Anthropic's job posting show that there are still significant opportunities for writers in tech, the industry has long been noted as being highly sensitive to potential disruption by AI. In 2023, a writer told Business Insider that her jobs were already being taken over by ChatGPT. AI leader Andrej Karpathy, who was recently hired by Anthropic, rated writing as having an exposure level of 8-9 on his professional exposure scale, indicating "very high exposure" to changes driven by AI.
A Promising Future for the Humanities
Anthropic's president, Daniela Amodei, has a background in writing. Her undergraduate degree was in literature, and she stated that she does not regret it. In February, she asserted that the humanities would become even more valuable. "In a world where AI is very intelligent and capable of doing so many things, what makes us human will become much more important," she said. Despite the threat of AI, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 4% growth in writing jobs between 2024 and 2034, a steady pace.
