Anthropic Reduces Claude Code's System Prompt by 80%

Anthropic has announced an 80% reduction in the system prompt for Claude Code. Tariq Shihipar, a technical staff member at Anthropic, describes a fundamental shift in how AI models are guided, related to the new Fable 5 models, also known as the Mythos class.

More instructions and more examples no longer automatically lead to better results. "Recently, we discovered that this new class of models prefers a shorter system prompt," says Shihipar, adding that examples "tend to constrain it because it is actually more imaginative than the examples we provide." Instead of strict rules like "don't do this," Anthropic is now trying to guide the Fable models through context, he adds.

According to Shihipar, this change has occurred in stages. The early models required short prompts with many examples and restrictive instructions. The prompts then became longer as the models improved in their understanding. Currently, they are becoming shorter again.
