A Strategic Partnership with SpaceX
Anthropic has recently sealed a major partnership with SpaceX, allowing it to take full control of the Colossus 1 data center. This data center, owned by SpaceX, offers an impressive computing capacity of over 300 megawatts and houses more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs. These resources are expected to be operational within a month, marking a significant milestone for Anthropic in expanding its processing capabilities.
With this agreement, Anthropic plans to enhance the capabilities of its Claude model. Customers of the Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise offerings will see their time limits for Claude Code doubled in a month. Additionally, the rate limit during peak hours will be removed for Pro and Max accounts. API limits for the Claude Opus models will also see substantial increases.
Increased API Capabilities for Claude Opus
The new API limits for Claude Opus are impressive. The maximum number of input tokens per minute will increase from 30,000 to 500,000. For output tokens, the capacity will rise from 450,000 to 2,000,000 per minute. Other limits will also see significant increases, such as from 90,000 to 200,000, from 800,000 to 5,000,000, from 160,000 to 400,000, and from 2,000,000 to 10,000,000. Finally, an increase from 400,000 to 800,000 is also planned.
An Expanded Network of Collaborations
This agreement with SpaceX adds to a series of strategic partnerships that Anthropic has already established. The company has signed computing contracts with Amazon and Google, each reaching up to 5 GW, as well as with Broadcom. Additionally, it has invested $30 billion in Azure capabilities with Microsoft and NVIDIA, and $50 billion with Fluidstack.
Energy and Political Commitments
Anthropic and SpaceX are also exploring the possibility of developing an "orbital AI computing capacity." At the same time, Anthropic is committed to offsetting any increase in electricity prices for American consumers resulting from the operation of its data centers. The company plans to extend this commitment to other future locations.
On the political front, Anthropic has stated that it will only partner with democratic countries whose legal and regulatory frameworks support investments of this scale. This position contrasts with the partnership with SpaceX, a company led by Elon Musk, whose political views are sometimes perceived as authoritarian, highlighting a potential contradiction in this agreement.
