Major artificial intelligence companies are seeking to design chips tailored to their specific needs. Anthropic, under the leadership of Dario Amodei, has decided to pursue this path by developing its own semiconductors for its AI model, Claude.
Artificial intelligence heavily relies on semiconductors, particularly GPUs produced by NVIDIA, and RAM. To reduce this dependency and improve the efficiency of their systems, companies like OpenAI have already begun developing their own chips, such as the Jalapeño AI chip. Anthropic is following this trend by assembling a dedicated team to create custom chips.
Anthropic is currently recruiting engineers with expertise covering the entire hardware and software stack. The goal is to design chips capable of running Claude faster and more efficiently, thereby meeting the needs of its clients. However, Anthropic does not aim to completely replace the chips provided by partners like AWS, Google, AMD, and NVIDIA, but rather to complement them.
The development of custom chips represents a significant investment, nearing $500 million, due to the costs associated with hiring experienced engineers and establishing reliable industrial processes. To date, Anthropic has not yet specified a timeline for the development of these chips nor indicated whether it plans to produce them in-house.
