Anthropic and SpaceX Join Forces to Boost Claude Code

An Ambitious Partnership for Claude Code

Anthropic, a company specializing in artificial intelligence, recently announced a strategic partnership with SpaceX. The goal is to enhance the capabilities of Claude Code, a flagship product of the company. During the "Code with Claude" conference, Anthropic revealed its intention to break down the barriers that have so far limited the evolution of Claude Code. Thanks to this agreement, the company will benefit from over 300 megawatts of additional computing power, as well as access to SpaceX's Colossus 1 supercomputer. This initiative aims to provide more resources to users of the Pro and Max versions while reducing the restrictions that have frustrated developers. Anthropic is thus preparing to meet the growing needs of businesses in the field of multi-agent AI.

Colossus 1: The Technological Pillar of the Partnership

The partnership between Anthropic and SpaceX is based on the use of the Colossus 1 supercomputer. This system is presented as the technological heart of the agreement, integrating over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs. Among these GPUs are the H100, H200, and GB200 models, which are among the most powerful on the market for training and executing advanced AI models. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, confirmed that this additional computing power will allow for increased usage limits for Pro and Max subscribers. The company has already doubled the five-hour usage window on Claude Code and removed restrictions related to peak hours. Additionally, API limits for the Opus model have been increased, addressing the complaints of developers who regularly criticized the limitations imposed by Claude Code.

A Strategic Opportunity for Anthropic

Anthropic views this partnership as an opportunity to strengthen its position in the AI market. Indeed, some professional users have moved away from OpenAI following controversies surrounding certain U.S. military contracts. Claude Code has thus emerged as a credible alternative for engineering teams, thanks to its code generation and orchestration capabilities. The association with SpaceX could therefore allow Anthropic to capture a larger market share.

Elon Musk Changes His Tone Towards Anthropic

Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX, had until recently expressed sharp criticisms of Anthropic. In February, he accused the company of "hating Western civilization" and relayed criticisms regarding the governance and safety principles of Claude. However, discussions surrounding the partnership seem to have changed his perception. Musk stated that he spent a lot of time with Anthropic's leaders to understand their approach to AI safety. He expressed being "impressed" by their work, asserting that no exchanges had "raised his suspicions."

Towards Orbital Data Centers?

Beyond the current partnership, Anthropic and SpaceX are already considering collaboration on orbital data centers. Anthropic has expressed interest in developing several gigawatts of computing capacity in space. Future AI models will require levels of energy, cooling, and space that terrestrial infrastructures may struggle to provide quickly. Orbital centers could thus support the next generation of generative AI. This announcement underscores Anthropic's commitment to securing its industrial future. The company has reportedly already signed several infrastructure agreements with giants like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and NVIDIA to expand its computing capabilities. With SpaceX, Anthropic adds a partner that offers immediate and massive power.
