A Warning on AI Self-Improvement
Anthropic, a major player in artificial intelligence development, has recently expressed concerns about the rapid pace at which AI is evolving. While it is not yet a certainty, the lab highlights the possibility that AI could soon begin to build itself. This concept, known as "recursive self-improvement," could enable systems to autonomously develop their successors, thereby accelerating technological progress. However, Anthropic warns of the risk that this self-improvement capability could lead AI to escape human control.
Claude, a Pillar of Innovation
Currently, Anthropic heavily relies on its Claude model for technological updates. By utilizing AI agents, Anthropic engineers have managed to increase the amount of code produced eightfold between 2021 and 2025. Last May, 80% of the added code came from Claude, with quality approaching that of human-written code. AI also plays an increasingly significant role in research, a crucial area for Anthropic. The lab has outlined three possible scenarios for the future, one of which includes AI systems capable of recursive self-improvement that "begin to build their successors."
Reducing Human Roles and Technological Limits
In a scenario where recursive self-improvement becomes a reality, the role of humans in AI development would be significantly reduced. Efforts would then focus on supervision, validation, and verification of a "virtual lab" run by AI systems. According to Anthropic, the only limit to the evolution of this technology would be the available computing power.
A Call to Slow Down Development
Although Anthropic does not view this scenario as inevitable, the lab believes it would be wise to slow the evolution of AI. "If it were possible to effectively slow the development of this technology to give us more time to address its immense implications, we think that would probably be a good thing," states Anthropic. The lab suggests that the world should have an option to slow down or pause the development of the most advanced AIs, allowing researchers and companies time to prepare. However, such a measure should not enable less cautious companies to catch up technologically.
Towards Global Coordination
To prevent companies and governments from pursuing AI development despite security risks, Anthropic advocates for the establishment of a "global coordination mechanism." Without this worldwide coordination, AI development could continue unchecked, increasing risks to global security. Anthropic emphasizes the importance of this coordination to manage the challenges posed by the rapid evolution of AI.
