Anthropic: Three AI Scenarios for the U.S. Economy by 2030

The lab behind Claude explores three trajectories for the American economy in the age of AI. According to its projections, the effects range from a sectoral shock on intellectual jobs to accelerated growth without wage declines, depending on the assumptions made.
The American Scope and the Assumed Limits by Anthropic
Anthropic specifies that its projections concern the economy of the United States. The lab emphasizes that its study does not take into account the possibility of hyper-efficient robots. It also reminds us that the extent of the impact on GDP, employment, and wages will depend on the evolution of AI models and their uses.
A Substantial Scenario with Stable Wages in Intellectual Professions
In a scenario described as substantial, Anthropic estimates that AI could perform half of the intellectual tasks by 2030, largely autonomously, but the majority of these tasks would still be carried out without AI. The economy would then experience growth twice its usual rate. According to the projections, only 2.5% of American workers would be required to change professions. Wages in intellectual professions would remain unchanged, while those in other job categories could see an increase.

A Modest Trajectory Comparable to the Internet Era
Anthropic also envisions a modest scenario, where the impact of AI would be similar to that of the arrival of the internet. This hypothesis anticipates measured effects, without major upheavals in wages or employment.
The Extreme Scenario Combines Strong Growth and Shock for Intellectual Employment
The extreme scenario describes a faster-than-expected adoption of AI, with models capable of recursively self-improving. In this trajectory, the GDP of the United States would increase by 10% per year and double every 4.5 years. Unemployment in intellectual professions would exceed the usual levels seen during recessions, reaching 17.9%. Wages for these jobs would decline by more than 10% by 2030. Anthropic links the decrease in demand for intellectual work to wage pressure, while anticipating an increase in demand for manual jobs benefiting from productivity gains. Between 2026 and 2030, 13.5% of American workers would transition from intellectual jobs to other professions, but more than half would not manage to retrain by 2030.
