An Unprecedented Agreement Between Anthropic and xAI

Anthropic has recently signed a major agreement with xAI, committing to purchase 300 megawatts of computing power. This transaction, which has surprised the artificial intelligence sector, concerns the entire output of the Colossus 1 data center located near Memphis, Tennessee.

A Colossal Financial Commitment

To secure this massive computing capacity, Anthropic will pay xAI the impressive sum of $1.25 billion each month, until May 2029. The first two months will benefit from a reduced rate, allowing xAI to increase its capacity. In total, this agreement could bring xAI more than $40 billion.

Details Revealed by SpaceX

The terms of this agreement were disclosed in SpaceX's S-1 filing with the SEC. SpaceX explained that this arrangement allows for the monetization of unused computing capacity within their infrastructure. Both parties have the option to terminate the contract with 90 days' notice.

An Innovative Market Strategy

This partnership gives xAI a unique position in the AI market. Unlike most companies that build data centers for their own use or for others, xAI adopts a hybrid model, sometimes referred to as "neocloud." This approach allows for offsetting infrastructure costs by providing cloud services when internal demand is below available capacity.

Implications for xAI and the Market

SpaceX emphasized that this dual monetization strategy offers several avenues for generating returns on invested capital. However, it appears that xAI initially overestimated its computing capacity, necessitating rapid monetization ahead of a potential IPO. With the usage of Grok, xAI's flagship AI assistant, having declined, xAI opted to sell this excess capacity to Anthropic, one of its direct competitors.
