Andrej Karpathy Joins Anthropic
Andrej Karpathy, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence, has recently joined the pre-training team at Anthropic. Known for his role as the Director of AI at Tesla and as one of the founding members of OpenAI, Karpathy has also popularized the concept of "vibe coding." His contributions to the AI community are widely recognized, particularly through his regular publications on industry developments.
Karpathy announced this new chapter in his career on the social network X, expressing his enthusiasm for future advancements in the field of language models (LLMs). He emphasized his desire to return to research and development while continuing to focus on education, a field he plans to explore further in the future.
Anthropic clarified that Karpathy would be working on large-scale testing of Claude, a flagship project of the startup. He joins a team led by Nick Joseph, another former OpenAI employee, who was one of the early hires at Anthropic. This startup is now considered the main rival to OpenAI in the field of artificial intelligence.
A Career Marked by Innovation
Before joining Anthropic, Karpathy played a crucial role at OpenAI as a founding research scientist. He then took the helm of AI at Tesla, before briefly returning to OpenAI in 2023. In February 2024, he left OpenAI to found Eureka Labs, a company dedicated to education in artificial intelligence.
Interest in Anthropic saw notable growth in 2026, particularly due to advancements in the Claude Code and Cowork tools. This period was also marked by a confrontation with the Trump administration, which increased public attention on the startup.
Growing Tensions with OpenAI
The rivalry between Anthropic and OpenAI has intensified in recent years. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently accused Anthropic of fostering negative sentiments towards him, which led to an attack on his residence. These tensions highlight the fierce competition between the two companies to dominate the artificial intelligence sector.
This story is developing and could have significant implications for the future of AI.
