Apple and AI: Siri and Photos in the Spotlight at WWDC

At the recent Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple showcased its commitment to artificial intelligence, particularly through significant enhancements to Siri and the Photos app. These innovations aim to make AI more relevant and useful in users' daily lives.

Reframe: Intelligent Photo Adjustment

Apple introduced a new feature in its Photos app called Reframe. This technology uses Spatial Photos to analyze the depth of an image. It allows users to modify the composition of a photo during editing, utilizing generative AI to fill in spaces around the edges. For amateur photographers, this represents a considerable advancement, as achieving perfect framing during shooting can often be challenging. The ability to adjust the angle of the composition without creating an artificial separation between the subject and the background is a welcome improvement.

As a novice photographer, I often find afterward that I could have framed my photos better. Sometimes, distracting elements in the background need to be removed using tools like Clean Up or Object Eraser. However, these tools do not always yield a natural result. With Reframe, adjusting the angle of the composition helps avoid these issues, providing a more harmonious solution.

Simplified Automations with Shortcuts

Apple's Shortcuts app is a powerful tool for creating personalized automations across many applications. However, its initial complexity can discourage novice users. During my first attempt to create an automation, I gave up after a few minutes of frustration. With the arrival of Apple Intelligence on iOS 27, creating new automations has become more intuitive. Now, you simply describe the idea for the shortcut, and the system takes care of the rest.

Apple demonstrated this feature by showing how a user can set up a shortcut to inform their partner of their return time. By using GPS to detect when they leave work, the system calculates the estimated time of arrival home with Maps and automatically sends a message. This simplification makes the Shortcuts app more accessible and useful in daily life.

Safari: Enhancements for Secure Browsing

Safari is also receiving important updates on Apple devices, particularly on MacOS 27. Two features stand out: Notify Me and one-click updates for compromised passwords. The latter allows the Passwords app to automatically update compromised passwords, a task often neglected due to lack of time or energy. With this feature, securing accounts becomes possible without leaving the app, a valuable advancement for online security.

Notify Me, on the other hand, monitors web pages for changes, which can be very useful for tracking deals or price fluctuations. Personally, I already use Google Alerts to monitor certain travel routes, but this new feature from Apple could simplify the process by preventing my email inbox from becoming overloaded.

Siri Mode: Integrated Visual Intelligence

Finally, Apple has introduced an enriched Siri mode powered by Visual Intelligence in the Camera app. This mode allows users to interact with their environment without leaving the app, a particularly useful feature for travelers. Currently, I use tools like Google Lens to translate foreign menus, Gemini to check prices of potential purchases, and Splitwise to share group expenses. The new Siri mode could centralize these functions, making the user experience smoother.

Moreover, the integration of Siri into the Dynamic Island allows for contextual understanding of the content on the screen, which could transform the way we interact with our devices daily. I look forward to testing these new features, hoping they will genuinely enhance the user experience.
