At WWDC 2026, Apple unveiled Siri AI, a completely reimagined version of its famous voice assistant. This new version promises more natural conversations and improved understanding of personal context. Siri AI is now capable of analyzing what is displayed on the screen and searching for updated information directly on the web. Additionally, the assistant can generate text, a feature that brings it closer to the capabilities of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude.
Siri AI can access data from messages, emails, or photos, and perform tasks across multiple applications. For example, it can find a reservation in an old email, display a specific photo, or retrieve an address mentioned in a conversation. These features bring Siri closer to the offerings already available from its competitors, but the question remains: does Siri finally have what it takes to surpass these giants of generative AI?
One of the major strengths of Siri AI is its deep integration within the Apple ecosystem. Thanks to this integration, Siri can access a wealth of personal information from the user and perform multiple actions across different applications without manual intervention. While ChatGPT often limits itself to providing an answer, Siri can directly act on the device. For instance, Siri can analyze what appears on the screen to answer questions related to the displayed content, such as an event received in Messages or assistance from an open document on an iPhone or Mac.
Siri is also omnipresent in the Apple universe. Whether on iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, or Vision Pro, the assistant can be invoked in seconds, without needing to open a dedicated app. This native presence ensures a smooth and integrated user experience in daily life.
However, despite these advancements, Siri AI still does not surpass ChatGPT in terms of text generation and complex reasoning. OpenAI, with several years of experience in developing large language models, maintains a notable lead in these areas. Apple is fully aware of this.
One of the most striking announcements at WWDC 2026 does not directly concern Siri but rather the opening of the assistant to competing AIs. Apple introduced a system called "Extensions," allowing users to delegate questions beyond Siri's capabilities to AIs like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. This strategy can be seen as a form of pragmatism, but it also resembles an admission that, despite its progress, Siri is not yet capable of competing alone with the best chatbots on the market. Rather than waging a frontal battle against OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic, Apple prefers to transform Siri into a gateway to multiple artificial intelligences.
