Apple has recently acquired extensive access rights to the Gemini models developed by Google. According to reports from The Information, this access allows Apple to use Gemini within its own data centers, paving the way for the creation of lighter artificial intelligence (AI) models through a technique called distillation.
Distillation enables Apple to generate smaller models from Gemini. These lightweight models are capable of providing high-quality responses similar to those produced by Gemini, while requiring less processing power. This approach allows these models to operate directly on Apple devices, without relying on powerful external servers.
Although Gemini is primarily designed for applications such as chatbots and enterprise solutions, it does not always align perfectly with Apple's goals for Siri. Nevertheless, Apple continues to develop its own AI models in parallel, thanks to its dedicated team, Apple Foundation Models. Announcements regarding new AI features could be made during Apple's developer conference scheduled for June.
