Apple Focuses on Accessibility for Developers

At the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced an initiative aimed at attracting independent developers by reducing the infrastructure costs associated with artificial intelligence. Developers with fewer than two million app downloads on the App Store will be able to access Apple's Foundation Models, hosted on the Private Cloud Compute, at no cloud API cost.

This initiative continues Apple's efforts to support small developers, similar to its Small Business Program, which offers reduced commission rates. By eliminating infrastructure costs, Apple hopes to facilitate the exploration of new ideas without developers having to worry about additional expenses.

An Expanded Framework for Greater Flexibility

Apple also announced the expansion of the Foundation Models framework. From now on, these models will include image input and support for server models. This evolution allows developers to integrate the API with the cloud model provider of their choice, making access to large cloud models more affordable for complex tasks.

This initiative from Apple comes at a time when experimentation in AI is becoming increasingly expensive. By offering a cost-effective alternative, Apple positions itself as a key player for developers looking to avoid high cloud bills.

A Context of Budget Constraints

Apple is not the only company adapting to the growing budget constraints in the AI field. Giants like Meta and Amazon have recently halted their internal AI token usage rankings, while Uber announced it has exhausted its AI budget for 2026 in just four months. These examples illustrate the need for stricter financial management in the AI sector, a need that Apple is partially addressing with its new offering.
