Apple is preparing to revolutionize the user experience with its upcoming operating system updates by introducing the ability to choose third-party artificial intelligence models. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, this feature will be available in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, all scheduled for this fall.
Third-Party Chatbots for a Personalized Apple Intelligence
With this update, users will be able to select their preferred AI model to power Apple Intelligence. This includes features like Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. The third-party models, referred to as "Extensions," will offer unprecedented customization.
Voice Diversity for Siri
Apple is not only integrating third-party models but is also offering voice customization. Users will be able to choose different voices for Siri, depending on the AI model used. For example, an instance of Siri running on an Apple model could have a distinct voice from one using ChatGPT.
Integration via the App Store
Users will be able to select their preferred AI from providers who have integrated their models through the App Store. Once the AI app is installed, it can be set as the preferred AI in the Settings app.
Ongoing Tests with Google and Anthropic
Apple is already conducting internal tests with integrations of AI models from Google and Anthropic. While ChatGPT is currently the only third-party model integrated, this situation could change rapidly, especially with the planned redesign of Siri based on Google's models.
