Apple Settles $250 Million Lawsuit Over Siri and AI

Apple has decided to settle a class-action lawsuit by agreeing to pay $250 million. This lawsuit centered on allegations of false advertising regarding the promised artificial intelligence features for its voice assistant, Siri, ahead of the launch of the iPhone 16. The Financial Times was the first to report on this agreement.

The plaintiffs accused Apple of exaggerating the capabilities of Apple Intelligence, particularly concerning an enhanced version of Siri. They claimed that Apple implied these advancements would be available sooner than they actually were. The lawsuit highlighted that buyers of the iPhone 15 and 16 were misled into believing they were acquiring devices equipped with cutting-edge AI technologies that were not ready at the time of purchase.

Although Apple did not admit to any wrongdoing, the company chose to settle the matter amicably to avoid a lengthy legal battle. Under the terms of the agreement, U.S. customers who purchased an iPhone 15 or 16 between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, could receive compensation of up to $95 per device.

Since the announcement of Apple Intelligence in 2024 during WWDC, Apple had promised significant improvements for Siri, aiming to make it comparable to modern AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude. These enhancements are expected to be supported by Google Gemini, although recent rumors suggest that the upcoming iPhone operating system may offer users the option to choose from several third-party language models.

This settlement comes at a strategic moment, just ahead of Apple's annual developer conference scheduled for June 8, where the company is expected to unveil an AI-enhanced version of Siri.
