Paul Meade, vice president in charge of the Vision Pro headset at Apple, is reportedly leaving the company to join OpenAI's hardware team. This information was reported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. Meade was also responsible for the development of Apple’s smart glasses, which are expected to launch next year.
The Vision Pro, although expensive, has not achieved the success Apple anticipated. The company hopes that more affordable smart glasses will better compete with Meta's wearable devices.
According to Gurman, Meade's departure may be a consequence of the reorganization of Apple’s hardware engineering team, orchestrated by John Ternus, who is set to become CEO. This reorganization has reportedly left some vice presidents feeling demoted.
Additionally, OpenAI is already collaborating with Jony Ive, former Chief Design Officer at Apple, on an AI device. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has described this device as being more peaceful than an iPhone, although difficulties remain in finalizing the details, according to reports from last fall.
TechCrunch has reached out for comments from both Apple and OpenAI.
