Apple Accuses OpenAI of Industrial Espionage

Tensions are rising between Apple and OpenAI, the creator of the renowned ChatGPT. The Cupertino firm has recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of stealing trade secrets through former employees. While OpenAI is primarily known for its advancements in artificial intelligence, the company is also interested in creating hardware products based on this technology. This could potentially make OpenAI a direct competitor to Apple in certain product categories, although details about OpenAI's hardware projects remain vague for now.

An Apple representative told The Guardian that "significant evidence" has recently been uncovered, suggesting that OpenAI employees improperly acquired confidential and secret information from Apple regarding technologies, processes, and unreleased products. For its part, OpenAI has denied any interest in the trade secrets of other companies.

Serious Consequences Ahead

This case could become one of the most significant legal battles in the tech industry. According to The Guardian, Apple's complaint mentions Tang Yew Tan, a former Apple vice president who is now in charge of hardware at OpenAI. Apple accuses him of taking information about its suppliers when he joined OpenAI.

Apple also alleges that its former vice president encouraged candidates to disclose confidential information during job interviews. "He asked candidates still employed by Apple to bring ‘real pieces’ from Apple to the interviews, as part of ‘presentation and explanation’ sessions that allowed him and his team at OpenAI to obtain even more confidential information about Apple," the complaint reported by The Guardian states.

The complaint also mentions another former Apple employee who allegedly took a computer provided by Apple and used a method to download confidential files after joining OpenAI.

From Collaboration to Potential Rivalry

Despite these accusations, Apple and OpenAI are currently partners. This collaboration allows users of Apple products, such as the iPhone, to access ChatGPT models. However, Apple has begun to distance itself from OpenAI by choosing to collaborate with Google to develop its own artificial intelligence, named Siri AI.

The relationship between the two companies could become even more complicated with the potential launch of OpenAI's first hardware product. For this project, OpenAI is working with Jony Ive, the former head of design at Apple. There are also rumors about OpenAI developing its own smartphone, which could directly compete with the iPhone.
