Apple Watch Tests Siri Recaps and Live Rewind with Safeguards

Apple begins testing Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch, a suite of four AI features, two of which listen to conversations to summarize or replay them in text. The company describes a local processing method and Private Cloud Compute with rapid data erasure, promising a public beta before a general release.
Enclave Processing, Encryption, and Immediate Erasure on PCC
The processing relies on a secure enclave, where a dedicated audio buffer operates in protected memory inaccessible to the rest of the system. The audio is not accessible, even to Apple, and is only transmitted to the paired iPhone via secure pairing. Lightweight AI models on the S11 chip detect the presence of a conversation involving the wearer, and then the signal is transferred to the secure enclave of the iPhone. The phone converts the audio into a condensed text format, without filler words, and then encrypts this text. The summary is generated in the Private Cloud Compute and sent back to the phone, while the summary and the data used to produce it are immediately deleted from this infrastructure. Summaries are only accessible to the user and are encrypted during synchronization between devices. Apple specifies that these features should not affect the battery life of the watch or the phone.
Siri Recaps Produces High-Level Notes with Limited Retention
Siri Recaps generates high-level notes from a conversation. Apple states that there is no identification of speakers, no retention of raw audio, and no verbatim transcription. The result takes the form of a sentence and key points that may mention dates or deadlines, pricing information, or payment plans, and other factual elements, useful for example in work meetings, parent-teacher conferences, or training sessions. The device aims to mimic note-taking without emotion or tone and can assist when hands are busy or attention is focused. Summaries are not recorded when the user is listening to music through headphones or activates noise-canceling features. At the end of the day, a reminder prompts the user to review saved notes, keep them, store them in Notes, or export them to Journal; if no action is taken, they are deleted after seven days. A reminder also appears upon morning unlocking. The user has the option to activate the feature manually or schedule it—such as restricting it to work hours—and can disable this option at any time via the Control Center. The system has been designed to exclude certain sensitive data, such as government IDs, financial and authentication information, certain personal identifiers, and any content that encourages self-harm.

Live Rewind Displays 15 Seconds of Text with Visual and Audio Cues
Live Rewind allows users to review what has just been said if they missed it. A double tap on the digital crown displays the text of the last 15 seconds on the watch. The user can view the excerpt and then let it disappear permanently, or save it in the standalone Siri app introduced with iOS 27 for later reference. This feature can help recall a name or note something heard during a brief presentation. An option to "Ask Siri" also allows for clarification on a mentioned term. The double tap triggers a chime and an animation to alert those nearby that a recording has taken place. Unsaved excerpts are automatically deleted after 30 seconds. To produce these clips, the Apple Watch transfers the audio to the iPhone for processing.
Compatibility, Other Features, and Deployment Timeline
Audio Intelligence includes four optional features on Apple Watch Series 12, including the detection of important sounds and song identification via Shazam, in addition to Live Rewind and Siri Recaps that handle conversations. The entire suite relies on the S11 chip, the built-in microphone, AI models running on the iPhone, and Private Cloud Compute, and is announced for Apple Watch Series 12 as well as Apple Watch Ultra 4. The current phase is a developer beta within iOS 27.3, following an announcement in September. Apple plans to move to a public beta for broader testing before a general availability.
