Claude Invites Itself into Word
After integrating with Excel and PowerPoint, Anthropic is expanding its assistant Claude to Microsoft Word, as announced on April 13, 2026. This extension aims to enhance the Office suite, particularly targeting teams handling large volumes of documents, such as legal, financial, and compliance departments.
Advanced Features for Word
In Word, Claude offers writing, rewriting, analysis, and review capabilities directly integrated into the interface. The modifications proposed by the AI appear in track changes mode, allowing users to accept or reject them via the review pane. Here are some of the features offered:
-
Text Rewriting: Claude can adjust tone, eliminate passive voice, or simplify phrasing while preserving formatting.
-
Style-Conforming Writing: The AI generates content that adheres to existing styles, including citations to imported sources.
-
Comment Management: Claude reads and modifies discussion threads, explaining each change made.
-
Inconsistency Detection: The tool flags terms used inconsistently, cross-reference errors, and numbering mistakes.
-
Document Questions: Claude answers specific questions with clickable citations linking to the relevant sections.
The add-in also offers Skills, workflows that can be saved and reused by the entire team.
Access and Installation of Claude for Word
For now, Claude in Word is accessible only to subscribers of the Team and Enterprise plans. It can be installed via the Microsoft Marketplace and is compatible with .docx and .docm files on Mac, Windows, and the web version of Word.
Once installed, Claude appears as a button in the upper right corner of the application, next to the Copilot button. Like the latter, it opens a side panel for instructions. Preconfigured commands such as /check-doc, /copy-edit, /summarize-contract, and /flag-issues are available. The query field allows users to choose the language model (Opus 4.6 or Sonnet 4.6), attach images or documents, and enable web search, skills, or connectors.
In a usage example, Claude demonstrated its ability to organize a summary from disorganized notes, producing a clear action plan after a short processing time.
