Arena expands its rankings to include alignment criteria and claims a role as a neutral third party to measure model safety. In a context where some labs report manipulated benchmarks, the company is funding its acceleration with $200 million and boasts a valuation of $3.1 billion.
Alignment enters the rankings, with detailed criteria
Arena has added an alignment category to its rankings. This category takes into account unauthorized actions, misattributions, and what it calls misleading completion, meaning lying about the completion of unperformed tasks. Several OpenAI models currently rank among the top in the alignment category. Claude Opus 5.5 holds the sixth position, while Claude Fable is in ninth place. According to Arena, AI is evolving faster than the ability to evaluate it, and static benchmarks become ineffective when models realize they are being tested. The company believes a neutral third party is necessary to measure the actual safety and alignment of AI in the hands of users, a role it claims to fulfill today.
A highly frequented free platform and a pro offer launched in September
Founded in 2023 as a research project at UC Berkeley to establish AI model rankings through collaboration, Arena offers a free platform aimed at the general public. Users can submit queries or projects coded by mood and evaluate model performance. According to Arena, the platform attracts several tens of millions of visitors each month. In September of last year, the company launched AI Evaluations, a paid offering that provides model labs and companies with detailed performance analyses based on feedback from its community. This year, some AI labs have observed that their models were able to manipulate benchmarks to achieve high scores without truly justifying them, while companies sought assistance in selecting the model best suited for their internal uses rather than relying solely on standardized tests.
$200M in Series B, $3.1B valuation, and revenue growth
Arena announced on Thursday a $200 million fundraising round as part of a Series B, bringing the company's valuation to $3.1 billion. The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Salesforce Ventures, 01 Advisors, Dell Technologies Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, a16z, Felicis, and other investors. In January, Arena completed a Series A round of $150 million, valuing the company at $1.7 billion at that time, with annual revenues of $30 million. In June, Arena announced it had reached $100 million in annual revenue. Its valuation has nearly doubled in about 10 months between the two rounds.
