Astropad and the Mac Mini: A Winning Combination for AI

The popularity of Apple's Mac Mini has skyrocketed, particularly in China, where it has become the preferred choice for experimenting with autonomous AI agents like OpenClaw. In response to this trend, Astropad, an innovative company, has decided to develop a remote desktop solution specifically tailored to this context.

Last Tuesday, Astropad's CEO, Matt Ronge, unveiled Astropad Workbench, a new remote desktop solution for Apple devices, which he describes as "designed for the AI era." Unlike traditional solutions, Workbench is not intended for IT support, but specifically for AI agents.

A Solution Designed for Human Operators

While an AI agent on a Mac Mini can operate without a screen, human operators need to connect periodically to monitor activities, check logs, or restart stalled tasks. This is where Workbench comes in, providing an intuitive interface for these operations.

Advanced Features for Optimal Control

Astropad Workbench stands out with its numerous features, including:

  • High-fidelity streaming for optimal image quality
  • Voice commands allowing users to dictate instructions and commands
  • Support for various input methods, including keyboard, Apple Pencil, and touch
  • Compatibility with iPad and iPhone, offering accessibility on the go

For those managing multiple Macs running AI agents, Workbench offers a device selector to facilitate navigation between different machines.

An Innovation Born from Internal Need

The idea for Workbench originated from an internal need at Astropad and among their friends. "We have widely adopted AI at Astropad," explains Ronge. "Sometimes, an agent is executing a long task, and it's crucial to be able to check its status. Existing tools did not meet this specific need."

The LIQUID Protocol: A Proven Technology

Workbench utilizes Astropad's proprietary display protocol, LIQUID, which ensures total fidelity, even at Retina resolutions. This protocol is already used in other Astropad products, such as Luna Display and Astropad Studio, and supports workflows used by creative professionals.

Although monitoring an AI agent does not always require high image quality, Ronge emphasizes the importance of this feature, especially for approving designs or mockups generated by AI.

Established Competition

The remote desktop software market is already occupied by players like Jump Desktop, RustDesk, AnyDesk, Parsec, and other VNC-based solutions. However, Ronge asserts that these tools are not suited to the specific needs of monitoring AI agents.

With Workbench, it becomes easy to check log statuses, spot issues, and restart stalled tasks, all from an iPhone or iPad.

iOS Expertise Driving Innovation

"We have extensive experience in creating applications for iPad," says Ronge. "We know how to design good iOS applications, and we have integrated a voice model for natural interaction with AI agents."

This technology uses Apple's voice model, allowing users to direct their AI agent with a simple voice command.

An Evolving Product

Although Workbench is still in development, with adjustments to be made, the team is actively working on its improvement. Versions for Windows and Linux are in the works, along with optimization of the application for iPhone.

Availability and Business Model

The software is compatible with macOS 15 and above, as well as iOS 26. It is available for free download, offering 20 minutes of access per day. For unlimited access, a subscription is offered at $10 per month or $50 per year.

Astropad, a self-funded and profitable company, already has over 100,000 customers. With Workbench, Ronge hopes to attract both AI enthusiasts and businesses, as remote support for AI agents becomes increasingly essential.

"I am confident that businesses will adopt our solution," concludes Ronge. "The productivity gains we are seeing are undeniable, and this directly addresses the needs of companies."
