Australia: Campuses to Open Access to ChatGPT Edu by 2027

Australian universities are establishing AI usage rules and planning large-scale deployments of ChatGPT Edu. Meanwhile, a survey commissioned by OpenAI shows that students are already using it extensively and want more practical applications.
Explicit Rules and Timelines Set Until 2027
UNSW has implemented an assessment framework titled "Can, Cannot, Must" to guide the use of AI. This system allows teachers to specify whether the use of AI is permitted, prohibited, or required, thus providing students the opportunity to practice appropriate usage while demonstrating their knowledge. Australian universities are also formalizing clear expectations regarding AI usage. In terms of timelines, the University of Sydney plans to deploy ChatGPT Edu in the first semester of 2027, while La Trobe University announces universal access in the first quarter of 2027 for its students and staff. At UNSW, access to ChatGPT Edu is gradually expanding with the goal of making it available to the entire student community.
Tool Access: ChatGPT Edu and APIs at the Core of Initiatives
UNSW is deploying ChatGPT Edu for over 80,000 students and staff members. The University of Sydney is also collaborating with OpenAI, with planned access to ChatGPT Edu accompanied by training and guidance. At La Trobe, the 3,500 staff members already have access to ChatGPT Edu, and universal access for 45,000 students and staff is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. The University of Adelaide is using OpenAI's APIs for defensive security work, aiming to strengthen its cybersecurity posture.

Pedagogy and Pathways to Industry Structured Around AI
Artificial intelligence is being utilized for educational purposes to conduct clinical simulations, provide robot-assisted teacher training, and carry out student projects in partnership with industry. UNSW and OpenAI intend to integrate the fundamentals of generative AI and Codex into curricula and teachings, particularly applying them during hackathons and projects related to the industrial sector. The collaboration also aims to connect students with internships, graduate positions, and startup networks. Meanwhile, institutions are designing frameworks to guide learning and assessment, aiming to develop practical skills while maintaining the requirement for personal judgment. These experiences serve as a reference for designing AI-supported learning with explicit expectations.
A Generation of Students Already Heavily Using AI
In Australian universities, students are using AI to generate ideas, design assistants, and bring concepts to life in the form of operational prototypes, enabling them to acquire useful skills in research, business, or their personal projects. According to a study commissioned by OpenAI involving over 1,000 Australian university students, 81% report using AI several times a week, and 33% several times a day. 28% have already developed an AI-based agent or assistant to help them with their studies, work, or daily life. 79% wish their institution offered more opportunities to leverage advanced AI tools in practical projects, and 79% express interest in AI applications in health, environment, scientific research, or cybersecurity. Furthermore, 61% believe that mastering AI will be crucial for their career success, 69% think these skills will become as essential as digital literacy, writing, or numeracy, and 65% believe that proficiency in AI will give Australian graduates an edge in the international job market. Over 76% express interest in entrepreneurship or freelance work, and more than 68% feel that AI will make launching a business more accessible.
