Claude Code Integrates with Discord and Telegram via Channels

On March 19, 2026, Thariq Shihipar, an engineer at Anthropic, announced via a tweet the launch of Channels. This new feature of Claude Code, currently in research preview, allows developers to control the tool directly from Telegram and Discord.

"We just released Claude Code channels, which allows you to control your Claude Code session through select MCPs, starting with Telegram and Discord. Use this to message Claude Code directly from your phone."

How the MCP Server Works

The Channels feature relies on an MCP server that acts as a gateway. When a request is sent from Telegram or Discord, it is redirected to the active Claude Code session on the developer's computer, with access to files and the working environment. The agent processes the event and sends the response back to the originating messaging platform.

Anthropic specifies that when Claude responds via a channel, the incoming message appears in the terminal, but not the text of the response. The terminal shows the tool call and a confirmation, while the response appears on the original platform.

For continuous use, it is recommended to stay connected to claude.ai and keep Claude active in the background or in a persistent terminal. Each channel uses a whitelist of senders for security reasons, allowing only authorized IDs to send messages.

A New Gateway for Claude Code

Channels adds to the other gateways available for Claude Code, such as Remote Control for managing a session from a smartphone or tablet, and the Slack integration launched in December for delegating tasks via collaborative messaging. The feature also shares some similarities with OpenClaw.

Setting Up and Accessing Channels

Channels is available for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. Individual users can activate it session by session with the flag "--channels". Businesses must enable it manually through the administration interface.

To set up Channels on Telegram or Discord, Anthropic provides a help page detailing the installation of plugins, management of whitelists, and technical prerequisites.

The feature requires Claude Code version 2.1.80 or higher and authentication via a claude.ai account. Access via API key or through the Console is not supported.
