AWS Introduces Amazon Connect Health to Transform Healthcare

Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently unveiled a new platform, Amazon Connect Health, which utilizes artificial intelligence agents to alleviate administrative tasks in the healthcare sector. This innovation aims to automate processes such as appointment scheduling, documentation management, and patient information verification, thereby providing valuable support to healthcare organizations.

The platform is designed to comply with HIPAA standards and integrates seamlessly with electronic health record (EHR) systems. AWS has already established partnerships with EHR software providers, data integrators, and companies specializing in patient engagement, further enhancing the platform's effectiveness.

AWS Strengthens Its Presence in the Healthcare Sector

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by AWS to establish itself in the U.S. healthcare industry, which is valued at approximately $5 trillion. AWS is not new to this field. In 2018, the company launched Amazon Comprehend Medical, a natural language processing tool for unstructured medical data, and in 2021, it introduced Amazon HealthLake, a HIPAA-compliant FHIR infrastructure for organizing health data. More recently, in 2022, AWS launched HealthOmics, a bioinformatics workflow.

However, Amazon Connect Health represents AWS's first major offering in AI agent products, capable of performing complex tasks on behalf of users while adhering to existing regulations. The platform is designed to integrate with existing clinical software, thereby facilitating the management of administrative workflows, such as reviewing medical histories, medical coding, and clinical documentation.

Features and Cost of Amazon Connect Health

Currently, Amazon Connect Health offers features such as patient verification and ambient documentation. Appointment scheduling and patient insights are in preview, while medical coding and other features will be gradually rolled out to customers.

The software is priced at $99 per month per user, for a maximum of 600 encounters per month. AWS notes that most primary care physicians manage up to 300 encounters per month, making this solution particularly well-suited to their needs.

An AWS spokesperson has not yet responded to TechCrunch's requests for clarification regarding testing and deployment timelines.

Other Amazon Advances in Healthcare

Beyond its cloud business, Amazon has ramped up initiatives in the healthcare sector in recent years. In 2018, the giant acquired the online pharmacy PillPack for approximately $1 billion, and in 2022, it purchased the primary care company One Medical for $3.9 billion. These acquisitions have been integrated into Amazon's retail and physical operations, including same-day prescription delivery and virtual consultations for children.

The use of AI to alleviate administrative burdens in healthcare, a focus of Amazon Connect Health, is not new. Startups like Regard, founded in 2017, use AI to take notes for doctors and analyze patient data to reduce administrative burnout. Notable, another startup from 2017, focuses on automating admissions and scheduling through AI.

Competition in Healthcare AI

Major AI companies have recently entered this sector. In January, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health, a version of its chatbot designed to answer health-related questions. Shortly after, Anthropic announced Claude for Healthcare, a similar product offering medical advice to consumers and tools for healthcare professionals. These solutions are designed to comply with HIPAA, although ChatGPT Health, aimed at consumers, is not compliant.
