Airbnb's Brian Chesky Launches New AI Lab

Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb, has decided to take a new step in the field of artificial intelligence by supporting the creation of a dedicated laboratory for this technology. This initiative, reported by Bloomberg and confirmed by a source close to the matter to TechCrunch, illustrates Chesky's desire to go beyond his current role as an influencer in the AI sector.

Airbnb has already integrated AI-based coding tools, but Chesky expressed reservations last year about adopting existing language models, deeming them not yet sufficiently mature for a partnership. His experience with Sam Altman, whom he met in 2006 through Y Combinator, was pivotal. Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, benefited from Chesky's advice on managing a rapidly growing company.

Chesky played a crucial role during Altman's return to the helm of OpenAI after his ousting by the board for lack of transparency. He was involved in the negotiations for Altman's reinstatement and advised him on public relations while rallying support for him among influential figures in Silicon Valley. Chesky had even been considered a potential board member of OpenAI.

Chesky's AI laboratory project could potentially compete with OpenAI, although details about its specific objectives remain unclear. Bloomberg suggests that the focus might be on user interaction and design, areas that are dear to Chesky at Airbnb.

This initiative is reminiscent of Brett Adcock's work with Hark, an AI laboratory focused on user interface for an AI assistant, although Hark also concentrates on hardware products.

Chesky does not plan to leave his position as CEO of Airbnb to lead this new laboratory. A source indicates that he will remain at the helm of Airbnb, leaving the management of the laboratory to someone else. This future leader will need to navigate a competitive environment while working under the supervision of a founder known for his meticulous management style.
