Bun Rewritten in Rust Thanks to Claude Fable 5: One Million Lines in 11 Days
Bun has abandoned Zig in favor of Rust with the help of Claude Fable 5, writing over one million lines of code in 11 days.
Developer Jarred Sumner explains that this change was motivated by reliability. Zig continued to generate memory errors and crashes that were difficult to fix permanently. Rust, on the other hand, detects many of these bugs at compile time.
Sumner used a preliminary version of Claude Fable 5 for this project. Around 64 instances of Claude operated in parallel for 11 days, producing over one million lines of code. The API bill amounted to approximately $165,000. According to Sumner, a human team would have required about a year to accomplish this work.
The new version, Bun v1.4.0, is available as a canary release. It fixes 128 bugs and runs about 2 to 5% faster. Sumner did not have to worry about the high cost, as Bun and his team were acquired by Anthropic in December 2025.
